Launching his month-long Swami Vivekananda Yuva Vikas Yatra from Becharaji in Mehsana, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi lashed out at the Congress for doing everything that is ethically wrong with the sole purpose of targeting him and denying Gujarat its due.
As Modi thundered, a mammoth crowd burst into cheers again and again, roaring their approval for every word uttered by him. Assembly election is scheduled in Gujarat later this year.
A combative Modi accused the Congress of “misusing” the CBI to target him and dared the Prime Minister to face a SIT probe in the coal block allocation scam which has come to be known as ‘Coalgate’.
The BJP stalwart also slammed the Congress for “attacking the constitutional authorities”, accusing it of whipping up an atmosphere of anger against the CAG like it did against the Supreme Court in the 2G Spectrum scam.
Signalling that he would fight the coming election on the plank of “injustice meted out to Gujarat”, Modi struck an aggressive tone, pitilessly rebuking the Congress-led Government at the Centre for its many sins of omission and commission.
Announcing that his Government had imposed a comprehensive ban on the sale of ‘gutka’ which causes cancer, Modi appealed to the people to work towards “Congress-free Gujarat” on the lines of “gutka-free Gujarat” to wipe out “cancer”.
“I have faced multiple probes, now let the Prime Minister face a SIT probe on coal block allocations,” he said, adding, “To corner me, they form an SIT whenever they want to.”
“I appeal to him(Manmohan Singh) and Congress to come forward and have a competition in facing probes,” Modi said. “Let us see who has more prowess in facing such probes.”
Taking a swipe at the Congress, Modi said it was not alone in fighting the Assembly election (scheduled to be held by December) as the CBI was also with the Congress.
Modi said the Congress is in the habit of targeting constitutional authorities by creating an atmosphere of anger against those institutions that refused to toe the party’s line.
“On the one hand they (Congress) praise the Constitution. On the other, if anything goes against them, they speak against the authorities. Now, the Comptroller and Auditor-General is the Congress’s target,” Modi thundered.
On the 2G Spectrum scandal, the Congress had adopted a similar stand towards the Supreme Court. “Now, the CAG’s credibility is being questioned by the Prime Minister and his colleagues,” he said, rebuking the Congress.
Remind the people that there’s nothing new in the Congress’s way of manipulating the system for political gains, Modi said, “This was Indira Gandhi’s way. If you are not with her, create an environment against them. Today Congress is doing the same.”
Ridiculing Gujarat Congress leaders for pleading with the people to oppose him during his yatra, Modi asked: “Are you so scared that you won’t listen to my voice? Do you want Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister to face similar opposition when they come here?”
He said in a democracy everyone had a right to place his or her views. Taking a dig at local Congress leaders, he said his Government would extend all possible support for them to place their views before the people.
Blaming the UPA Government for the current economic situation, he said the Prime Minister should follow the Gujarat model of development.
