Now, journalist says Savita may not have wanted abortion

Kitty Holland, the journalist who broke the Savita Halappanavar abortion death story, has said that the Indian woman may not have wanted an abortion at all. Speaking to an Irish radio channel, Holland is reported to have said that Savita’s husband’s recollection of the matter may have been “a little muddled”.

Savita’s death had, in the last month, become a great galvanising force in favour of abortion activists in Ireland who were using the young woman’s death to legalise abortion in the country. Ireland is a Catholic country and abortion is legally prohibited there.

Holland said that her report was primarily based on the account provided by Savita’s husband Praveen, who has since refused to co-operate with the Irish authorities’ investigations and is now prepared to take matter to the European Court on Human Rights.
