The state-owned oil companies on Friday announced a cut in petrol prices by Rs. 2 per litre excluding local taxes, the steepest in over nine months, however keeping diesel rate unchanged. The move however failed to impress the country’s main opposition the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) who termed the step as a temporary gimmick. Echoing on the same lines Janata Dal United (JD-U) Chief Sharad Yadav said that reduction of petrol price is a part of the central government’s conspiracy. However, Congress leader P.L Punia came out in defense stating the price cut is a proof of the central government’s sincerity to reduce pressure on the common man’s pocket.
