Bangladesh crisis: Shibir activist dies in hartal violence

An Islami Chhatra Shibir activist was killed and at least 15 other people, including five policemen, were injured in a clash between Jamaat-Shibir activists and law enforcers during a hartal (shutdown) in Biswanath upazila on Wednesday.
According to a Priyo News report, the deceased Golam Rabbani, 25, was an activist of Shibir and son of Nizam Uddin at Pakhisiri village of the upazila.
The clash was triggered when police tried to disperse Jamaat-Shibir activists while picketing in the upazila headquarters during the hartal.
Jammat-Shibir activists pelted stones at police prompting them to retaliate with by firing rubber bullets. Rabbani and another Shibir activist were injured in the firing. They were rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital (SOMCH) where doctors pronounced Rabbani dead.
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Biswanath Police Station said five policemen were injured in the clash.
The local unit of Jamaat-e-Islami called the daylong hartal for today (Wednesday) in Sylhet division demanding release of the party’s city unit ameer Advocate Ehsan Mahbub Jubayer.
A team of the Rapid Action Battalion arrested Advocate Ehsan from the Dhaka’s Uttara area early Sunday.
