T M Soundararajan, veteran Tamil playback singer passes awayFollowing mild illness, 91 year old Tamil playback singer T M Soundararajan passed away on Saturday.  The singer, who was the numero uno choice of Tamil cinema icons M G Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan, was not well for sometime and had recently undergone treatment for breathlessness, they said.

Soundararajan is survived by his wife and two sons. Often hailed as the ‘uncrowned king’ of Tamil cinema, TMS,as Sounderarajan was fondly addressed, had rendered over 5,000 cinema and devotional songs and had been awarded various honours including the Padmashri and the state Government’s ‘Kalaimamani’.

A highly respected singer hailing from Madurai, Soundarajan had last sung in the theme song of the World Classical Tamil Conference in 2010, by A R Rahman. TMS was also known for his soul-stirring devotional songs, on Lord Muruga, with his most famous ‘Ullam uruguthayya’ (The heart melts) instantly evoking devotion even today.

He had also starred in some films. But Soundararajan dominated the scene for nearly four decades in which he almost sang for all leading heroes of Tamil cinema.

TMS as he was lovingly called was indeed a living legend. From my toddler days I had listened to his celestial voice which has mesmorized millions of Tamils here and abroad. I was born in Sri Lanka and cannot remember a single day when his song was not broadcast over Radio Ceylon as it was called then in the fifties and sixties. He had a marvellous voice and though he was not a classical carnatic musician in the real sense what he had acheived is far more than any singer could ever hope to attain. TMS was very much part of our lives and many who belong to my generation. long before TV was to become an inalienable part of our lives his golden voice through AIR had captivated millions and enhanced their lives. What Mohamed Rafi was to the Hindi and Indian cinema in general was equally true of TMS
as far as Tamil films were concerned. It was his voice that contributed to the phenomenal rise of MGR who ended up as the Tamil Nadu Chief minister. And his duets with Susheela too in a great measure elevated Jayalalitha to her present Queenly position

  • Sivakumaran

A great singer who has sung several thousands Tamil songs and ruled the Tamil Cinema industry for over 40 years. Even though he did not get proper recognition from both state and central governments for his achievements, he has several thousand ardent fans including hundreds of singers who follow his path and sing only his songs.

Thuguluva Meenatchi Iyengar Sounderarajan modulated his voice for a spectrum of lip-synching actors including Marudhur Gopalan (MGR) Ramachandran, Viluppuram Chinnaiahpillai (Sivaji) Ganesan, Ramaswamy (Gemini) Ganesan, Subramaniam (Jaishankar) Shankar, R. Muthuraman & Nageswaran C. (Nagesh) Krishna Gundu Rao – The only other playback singer who modulated and merged his voice to the persona of the actor lip-synching the song was Mohammad Rafi.
