Delhi Metro CCTV tapes on porn sites

CCTV cameras installed in and around Delhi Metro stations for security purposes are being misused as some intimate footage of couples captured by these cameras have reached the adult sites. But who is to be blamed for this–the metro officials or the CISF personnel who are the only people who can access the footage.

The cameras installed in Delhi Metro trains are being used to capture couples’ intimate moments and this shocking revelation was made by Hindi daily Hindustan on Tuesday. The video footage captured by the CCTV have even been uploaded on pornographic sites which became viral.

As per the daily, around 13 videos have already been uploaded on porn sites which have been viewed by nearly 1.5 lakh people. It seems many such videos have been made but are yet to come in public domain.

In the past, there have been repeated reports saying Delhi Metro being high on the terror list. As a result, high resolution cameras have been installed in and around Delhi Metro stations as well as inside train compartments.

The footage recorded by these cameras can only be accessed by select DMRC officials and CISF personnel in charge of security.

CISF Director General Rajiv told the newspaper, “We are just the monitoring agency. DMRC controls the database into which this CCTV footage goes, and so the leak most likely happened at its end.”

A DMRC official, on condition of anonymity, retorted that the videos are not just viewed by DMRC officials but also CISF personnel. So, it would be wrong to blame the Metro officials only.

The breach has more than one serious implication. Not only does it imply a security breach that penetrated information that was meant only for the eyes of security personnel, it also indicates that there is a corruption angle involved. After all, if security footage can be sold for money to porn sites, how useful is video surveillance going to be in case something suspicious does happen in a Metro Station or on board a train? It will be only too easy to buy off someone in the establishment and erase all evidence, or get the watchers to turn a blind eye.

Secondly, this incident has privacy breach implications as well.

Anuj Dayal, chief spokesperson of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was quoted by Hindustan as saying, “We have already started investigating into the matter. We are also cross-checking if these footages were taken in Delhi Metro trains.
