Om - the eternal soundOm, the eternal sound of void, governs and gives impetus to the perfect time cycle of creation, perfection and destruction throughout the cosmos. Each sound uttered by us is guided effortlessly towards either of these depending upon their emotional undercurrent. Positivity enhances creativity and perfection while negativity fuses with destruction. This is the basis of the various teachings in our scriptures that emphasise being truthful by synchronising the three planes of thought, word and deed. Such unity and the obvious lack of ulterior undercurrents enhance the strength of each sound and vibration emanating from our being. It endows the sadhak with vachan siddhi and the words uttered by such a being with absolute authority always establish the supremacy of truth.

The human spirit in body form is not sustained by eatables alone but empowered by a vibratory cosmic energy. Om pulsates this invisible force and enhances its flow into the human body through the Crown Chakra – the Sahsrar energy pool, associated with the pineal gland. This is also the highest point from where humans receive divine light that eradicates all ignorance, doubts and falsehood. Cosmic energy in the Crown Chakra is a reservoir for the manifestation of infinite potentialities – gunas. This centre is vibrated through the Om sound waves. Even the Biblical word ‘Amen’ and its Koranic counterpart ‘Amin’ reflect the sound of Om.

Om is thus the sound of the Universe, for the Universe, from the Universe to orchestrate the most magnificent and spectacular show of the Cosmos. It is not a mind created religious or ritualistic symphony.

The Bhagvad Gita states that a person who has mastered Om along with breath control – pranayam is the highest yogi. Such a realized soul automatically gets connected to the whole Universe, receives direct instruction, para knowledge and is empowered for blissful and fruitful existence. All dualities and suspicions about the purpose of human life dissipate and he/she experiences the essence of the poornta mantra

“Om poorn madah poorn midam, poornat poorn mudachyate
Poornasya poorn maadaya, poorn meva – avshishyate”

(Om that is perfect, this is whole, from the whole the whole becomes manifest. From the whole when the whole is negated, what remains is again the whole. Om! Peace be! Peace be! Peace be!)

Om is the causal sound of the play of the perfect Supreme Design corresponding to all the frequencies of the body mind and soul. It is the ultimate and the most powerful mantra delivered to humanity by the wise rishis of our great motherland – India. Om is easy to utter but to realise it constant sadhana (penance), ultimate dhyan and complete stillness of worldly sounds and thoughts is essential. Perfect peace thus attained facilitates the ushering in of all the knowledge (gyan) and wisdom (vivek) pervading in the Universe. Inventions are never ‘invented’ but simply rediscovered by capturing clues form the Universal intelligence. All scientists and visionaries who deliver new insights to humanity knowingly or unknowingly are connected or resonate with the omnipresent Om frequency. They might not utter it or be even obviously aware of it because it is a ‘feel’ of a state of transcendental wonder of absolute clarity, where the individual seems to dissolve to merge in the boundless limitless vastness of creation.

sorry, but the way you have written the verse,

Om poorn madah poorn midam, poornat poorn mudachyate
Poornasya poorn maadaya, poorn meva – avshishyate”

shows you have absolutely no idea of sanskrit. please do not explain if you yourself do not understand what it means.

Nice post, I’d like to stay out of the comment controversy, but just add a link to a YouTube video of the incantation of the mantra, beautifully done…

This is amazing and extremely informative. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

I am new to study and chanting of “OM” and have a few questions, posting it here hoping to get some advice from some senior members.

    1. Is there a best time of the day to chant OM ? I usually do it in the evenings.

    2. I heard different recitations of OM on the internet, how do I learn the right way to pronounce this ? What are your thoughts on (www.soundofom.in). Personally, I found this to be very relaxing. But I want to make sure its the right way of chanting.

    3. Is there any benefit to just listening to the chant of “OM”, whenever I cannot chant myself ? Like during work, etc ?

Thanks in advance and please keep up the great work.
