Delhi Metro porn clips scandal is sign of a deeper malaise

Delhi Metro porn clips scandal is sign of a deeper malaiseThis is not exactly the first time that an MMS clip of intimate moments of couples inside Delhi Metro trains have surfaced in the media. A local television channel Janta TV reported of such an incident nearly two years ago. The report shows edited footage of the MMS. The actual footage is also available on Youtube. I should refer to that particular video to make my point. This time the number of such clips uploaded on a pornographic site is reportedly large. I have no inclination or intention of visiting any such website. Thus, I am not the best person to write reviews of those MMS clips.

The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) and perhaps erroneously CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) are being blamed for this scandal. The CISF does not monitor the CCTV footage inside the coaches. It appears that some unscrupulous employees in the DMRC’s monitoring rooms in Metro Bhawan at Barakhamba Road or Shastri Park Metro Station are behind this mischief.

The Closed Circuit TV system is fundamentally meant for security purposes. Enabling security has itself become too obtrusive in modern life. But technology is always prone to misuse. The persons manning the technology are no angels. In the pre-internet era, a Hindi film victim might have been ‘blackmailed’ with the photos. But in the internet era, MMS clips go viral. Such is the deadly combination of security and technology.

Here lies the catch. Can we just blame the authorities? They have not peeped into the privacy of people’s bedrooms and bathrooms or even parks. A metro train is a public carrier whose passengers are expected to behave decently. But unfortunately many youngsters tend to forget the difference between the public and private spheres of life. It is often an embarrassment to travel with them. Thus one is not surprised at the authenticity of the content of the MMS.

The other issue is the much lamented security of women. Delhi is often touted as the rape capital of India despite having highest police to citizen ratio. But is there actually one thing that reflects this insecurity on part of girls? If you look at the video footage shown by Janta TV, it is the girl not the boy who is initiating the intimacy. Those claiming girls feel insecure in Delhi is largely exaggerating the problem. The question of women’s security crops up when something goes wrong. Until then, it is modernity!

The youngsters are often under the control of their hormones not their parents. Many actually live away from their homes. They are often gnawed by professional and emotional insecurity. They view such stolen moments of intimacy as relaxation. Changing lifestyles and lack of proper psychological training is resulting in this malaise in the society. This might be as true of the victims of these MMS clips as those in DMRC who circulated it.
