Bell’s ton helps England set Australia 311 to win 1st Ashes test

Australia’s batsmen have reached 111-2 at tea on day four, chasing 311 to win the first Ashes test against England at Trent Bridge.

Chris Rogers is 50 not out, from 104 balls with eight fours, but Joe Root had Ed Cowan caught for 14 by Jonathan Trott with the final ball of Saturday’s afternoon session.

Stuart Broad (1-22) took the only other wicket to trap Shane Watson lbw for 46.

Ashes: Bell, Broad turn tide for England on day 3

Australia needs another 200 runs for victory and will have to break the record at Nottingham for a successful fourth innings test run chase, set by England who scored 284 against New Zealand in 2004.

Earlier England posted 375 after Ian Bell hit 109 and Broad 65.
